I mean, they look like they're having fun... As I sat there at the light, I just watched him wave, turn, wave and turn. Pulling up a bit, I could see his face and he was smiling. It wasn't just a casual smile, it was a smile of doing something out of his element. Mr. liberty was chewing gum, and with every chomp and open, the chomp always returned to that giant smile. I thought to myself, that must be kind of a nice feeling-being out there for everyone to see; on a muddy, yellowed-grass stage. No boss to tell you you're not doing it right, just another person dressed as silly as yourself to come out in a couple of hours to change shifts with. Today's turquoise corner thespian had a forearm tattoo and white hair. Everyone's got different techniques. His simple delivery (the classic oscillating double 10-to-2 wave) made me respect his "no-frills" classiness.

I wonder how much they get paid. That's all I've got.

These are my parents in 1979. They won some kind of contest from Q104 (when it was a rock station). I believe they gave my parents a commemorative coin to mark the event. My dad is on the left, and my mom is on the right. It’s apparent that the presence of John Oates has overtaken my mother as she is cowering from his man-glow. The best part of this story, is that at this exact moment, I’m being formed in her womb. I’m hearing the soultry voices of H&O as they speak in perfect harmony. My mother’s immaculate conception basically comes down to this moment and answers the questions why I’m so hairy and why I wave so strangely. Note John Oates’ Royals shirt. Classy. All the way.

It really irks me when a server comes to my table and they start off by saying, "Hi my name is (usually some stupid name like Hannabelle or Kiffani), and I'll be taking care of you tonight..."

I don't really get that. Taking care of me? Are they gonna pay for my food? Will they chauffeur me around and drop me off at home safely after dinner? Will they tackle a crazed gunman in the restaurant to ensure we have a great experience? I don't think so. How about you just refill my drink every now and then and check back often and leave me my check, hmmm?

From now on, when I hear that phrase, I'll deduct a bit of my tip because I hate that line so much. And until my server steps in front of a bullet to save my life, they won't be taking care of me.

The other day I went to Blockbuster to rent the movie 'Elf.' All childrens/family movies are $.99 too. When I got to the counter, the sales lady asked me if I rented it every year. I thought about it and shrugged my shoulders and said yeah. She then told me that I could save some money and buy it new for $10. I frowned. "Yeah, but it'd take like, 10 years for me to save money. In my nearly 30 years of life, I've seen of nature's most tremendous wonders. I've seen a bald eagle soaring magestically and finally perching in his nest. I've hiked many trails and have stared in awe as Old Faithful delivered its hourly chore. I've swam in tropical waters with dolphins and seen giant sea turtles as they glide through the sea. Today I experienced something that would rival these wonders of nature. I heard a man use the phrase "Well, what the hay..." in a sentence. How could something so extinct, something so strange-sounding, so 1950's make it in a natural conversation in 2009? Cashier: Sir, would you like to large-size it for an extra $ .40? Man: Well, what the hay...

What the hay indeed! I've never heard that used ever. Now I can cross that one off my list. My list still consists of corny phrases that I've still to experience. But that's another blog.

Yesterday Meg and I went to Panera Bread Co. to eat. (I always think it's funny to call it Pantera Bread Co.) Anyhoo, while we were in line, this elderly lady came up and asked if we were in line. Then she said, "I can't read the menu from here," and walked up closer. Then... she cut in line. After we ordered, I walked up to her and she apologized for cutting in line, but it was too late! I told her she was sneaky and I knew her kind. As I was walking to my seat I walked past her and elbowed her gently as she was in my way. I hope it didn't leave a big bruise on her liver-spotted hands. If it did, maybe she'll look down at it in the next couple of months and realize that cutting corners doesn't pay off.

Megan told me to be nice to her because she doesn't have as long to live as I do. I said that I was mad at her for getting to live a long, cushy life (eating at Panera). Then I chomped on my potato chips as loud as I could in her general direction.

Well, we did leave the restaurant before she did. We win.

A Weekend of Racing

This weekend, I went to the Kansas Speedway. Saturday was the Nascar Truck Series Race and Sunday was the IndyCar race. I got to meet Danica Patrick, Helio Castroneves, Hideki Mutoh as well as others. On Sunday morning, I participated in the Trolley Run which was 4 miles, then went out to the speedway after that. Today, my leg and feet muscles are pretty tender. It was nice to see the tickets I designed as well.

Today, I was introduced to someone as a graphic designer. Then the person I was introduced to said, "I figured he was, because of his shirt." Is it so bad? Where I work, it seems that cold weather=dress like a mid 1980's jerk. I mean, they still sell warm clothes for middle-aged women these days, don't they? I swear if I see one more turtleneck I'm gonna go crazy. And by go crazy, I mean just look at the floor and scream and call the person a stupid idiot, internally of course. I'm really impressed by just how insanely cruel this woman's jacket is, and how she positioned her (barely legible) nametag around her lapel. I hope she doesn't read this and kill me with those huge scissors. I'm sorry, Sh-Sha... I can't read it.
